It's easy to hire a car in Barbados but here are some top tips if you haven't done it before!
1. In Barbados, we drive on the left-hand side of the road!
2. It's very hot here - no surprise there! So consider ensuring your chosen hire car has air conditioning (A/C) if you can't take the     heat. Many hire car outlets rent roofless or convertable vehicles as well (Mini Mokes, Jeeps, etc) - it is wise to keep the hood up during the peak sun hours (11am - 2pm) to avoid heatstroke.
3. Hire cars will come with maps and Barbados is fairly easy to navigate - a lot of the fun of hiring a car is finding your way around the island and tripping over the lesser travelled spots. However, if you have a difficult time with maps you might want to consider the optional sat-nav systems. Failing that, stop and ask a friendly local, or, view the bus signs - 'To City' you're heading towards Bridgetown and 'Out of City' you're heading away from it!
4. Barbados has a lot of pedestration crossings - zebra crossings if you're from the UK - but many can be faded, keep an eye out for them on the roads (and the exit of roundabouts on the highways) as it's courtesy to stop for pedestrians. They're marked by black and white stripes across the road.
5. The Bridgetown one-way system can be a navigational puzzle sometimes, but there is no rush, if in doubt, go slow and watch the traffic around you closely, you'll find locals very patient with 'H'ire cars.
6. When heading to the north or the east of the island make sure you have enough fuel in the car, gas stations get a little sparse that way and you want to ensure you can get back to where you started.
7. Speaking of gas stations in Barbados, you don't need to pump your own gas, the vast majority of petrol pumps are manned and Roundabouts are designed to make intersections safer and more efficient for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. As Roundabouts are an integral part of the traffic system in Barbados, it is important to understand how to use them safely.

Tips for renting a car in Barbados

How to use a Roundabout in Barbados.

Roundabouts are designed to make intersections safer and more efficient for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. As Roundabouts are an integral part of the traffic system in Barbados, it is important to understand how to use them safely.

There are a few things to remember about driving Roundabouts
• Yield to drivers in the Roundabout
• Stay in your lane; do not change lanes
• Do not stop in the Roundabout
• Avoid driving next to oversize vehicles

For further driving instructions, please review the information below.

What side do I drive on?

Firstly, please note that as a former British colony, driving in Barbados is based on the British system - that is to say 'PLEASE drive on the left!' The steering wheel of most vehicles is positioned on the right hand side of the vehicle.

How many lanes?

Roundabouts in Barbados have two lanes: (1) The Outside Lane (left most lane): is generally used by those vehicles wishing to exit at the first left exit road. (2) The Inside Lane: is used by those vehicles wishing to exit at the second or third exit road. Please note some drivers also use the outside lane to access the second exit, while this is not a recommended practice, it is important to exercise caution when using roundabouts.

Flow of Traffic and Navigating Roundabouts

All traffic flows around roundabouts in a clockwise direction. Once you have selected your lane, watch for pedestrians in the crosswalk as you approach the roundabout. Look right and wait for a break in traffic before merging with the incoming vehicles. Remember, in a multi-lane roundabout, you must yield to both lanes of traffic. Leave the circle by using your indicator and turn left onto the road of your choice. If there is no traffic in the roundabout, you may enter without yielding. Each Roundabout in Barbados has signage. Some Roundabouts have been honoured with the name of a prominent Barbadian. These signs therefore assist drivers with navigation of the island and are also a medoum through which public recognition and island pride are shown for individuals who have made a positive contribution to the development of the island.

If you are unsure or have any questions about driving in Barbados, please remember to ask our car hire representative when collecting your rental vehicle.

Rates and how we charge

Vehicle hire rates may vary from season to season. Rates are determined by supply, demand and market conditions. Rates quoted are only quaranteed at the time they are quoted.

Vehicle hire works on a 24 hour basis - e.g. if you have a vehicle at 11 a.m. and return it at 11 a.m. the next day, this would be considered a one day rental. Extra charges will be applied if the vehicle is returned late.

All rates quoted include unlimited milage.

Barbados Driving Permits

To drive in Barbados it is mandatory to obtain a Barbados driving permit, these may be purchased from our representative on delivery at a cost of US $5 per driver. These permits are valid for two months.

Age and Licence Requirements

Drivers must be over 21 and under 80 years old. Each driver must have held a valid driving licence for at least two years - this licence must be produced at the time of delivery of the vehicle, this is necessary for repeat clients as well.

Extension of Hire

Requests for extension of the hire should be made 24 hours ahead of the return date, while every effort will be made to allow extensions they are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.

Cancellation Policy

Clients are asked to inform us as soon as they know that they need to cancel the reservation. The reservation status will be changed to No Show if the client has not shown up for the car within 24 hours, and has not contacted us to change the delivery details.

Fuel Policy

Vehicles are delivered with approximately 1/4 tank of fuel (US $15 - $25 depending on the vehicle category), for which clients will be charged on delivery. The tank should be left as empty as possible on return.

Child Seats/GPS Units

Child/booster seats are available for hire - US $5 per day.

CPS Units are also available for hire - US $5 per day.

Extra Drivers

There is an extra drivers fee of US $2.50 per day, with a maximum charge of US $50 per rental per driver. The renter's spouse is exempt from additional drivers charges.

Insurance

With the rate of hire, the vehicle is comprehensively insured except for a deductible of US $1,750 in case of loss, accident or damage to the vehicles - regardless of fault. An optional EXCESS WAIVER is available and recommended to cover this deductbile. If this Excess Waiver is purchased, responsibility for the deductible is reduced to US $125. Upon return, one of our agents will inspect the vehicle, and determine if the vehicle has been returned in the same condition as it was received.

Credit Card Collision Coverage

Some credit card companies and internet sites offer collision coverage benefits. As is many types of coverage there are limitations, and clients should check carefully to verify the coverage they have. If the client has purchased excess waiver from another source and has an accident during the hire, he must pay for the damages incurred up to the maximum US $1,750. We will then supply the documentation required to reclaim this payment from the company. Clients must have a valid credit card so we can authorize a security hold if deemed necessary.

The Excess Waiver is voided if the client has an accident, and must be purchased again for the rest of the hire.

Additional Charges

Charges for hire, excess waiver, petrol, child seats and GPS units are suject to 17.5% VAT. Government taxes are suject to change without notice.

Tyre Policy

Tyre damage is not covered by our Excess Waiver. Flat tyres are repaired free of charge, but if a tyre or rim has been damaged beyond repair, the client will be charged for the cost of replacement. It is therefore imperative that clients check the tyres carefully when the vehicle is delivered.

Payment Methods

Payment can be made by VISA, Mastercard, American Express and Discover Credit Cards as well as US, Canadian, Sterling or Euros cash and travellers cheques, however credit card details must be supplied where payment is made in cash/travellers cheques.

Roadside Assistance

We offer a 24 hour roadside assistance service in case of emergencies.
